COVID-19 in Conflict Zones
"This session features a discussion between two authors of a recent report (access it below), which presents a sobering landscape on the impact of COVID-19 in conflict zones." During the conversation, a member of the fragility, conflict and violence team of the World Bank and the speakers look at some of the patterns identified in different geographies on opportunities and pitfalls provided by the pandemic on various actors, from Syria to Afghanistan, and from Somalia to Yemen. Jarrett Blanc

Senior Fellow for Geoeconomics and Strategy, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Jarrett Blanc (@jarrettblanc) is a senior fellow for Geoeconomics and Strategy at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He was previously the State Department coordinator for Iran nuclear implementation at the U.S. Department of State under President Obama, responsible for the full and effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program. Prior to this position, he was the acting special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mr. Blanc holds degrees from Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities. 

Tihana Bartulac

Senior Program Director, Creative Associates International Tihana Bartulac Blanc is the Senior Program Director for Creative Associates International’s BUILD Somalia Project, which has supported political processes in Somalia since 2016. She is Creative’s elections specialist and leads its East Africa strategy. She previously served as a Deputy Chief of Party for the International Foundation for Electoral Systems in Iraq, Associate Director of American University’s Center for Democracy and Elections Management, and taught graduate courses in International Election Administration at American University. She holds a Masters in International Policy and Practice from the George Washington University. 

Maximilien von Berg

Fragility, Conflict and Violence Consultant, World Bank Maximilien von Berg is a Fragility, Conflict and Violence specialist with experience in over ten fragile contexts. Since 2018, he has worked with several global practices of the World Bank and IFC advisory. Previously,  Mr. von Berg spent three years in Somalia and the Horn of Africa working on projects for international donors such as the European Union, DfID and the World Bank. He has since led research assignments and policy discussions to support operations and client governments across Sub-Saharan Africa. Mr. von Berg holds an MPhil in Politics (Comparative Government) from the University of Oxford.
