WIPO Academy Specialized Course on Open Source Software Licensing (DL-511)

The World Bank through the Legal Department and World Intellectual Property Organization through the WIPO Academy are collaborating to share knowledge and build capacity in using intellectual property rights as a legal tool for its instrumental value in achieving development outcomes. As an initial offering, the WIPO Academy is pleased to offer its popular Specialized Course on Open Source licensing through the World Bank’s Open Learning Campus.

The aim of this course aim is to enhance awareness of the possibilities and implications of proprietary and open-source software, and to create useful sources of information including concrete examples and a bibliography on software licensing, whether proprietary or open source, with a special emphasis on the needs of developing countries.

The course includes four modules and a final exam:

• Module 1: Intellectual property (IP) regimes for software

• Module 2: Software licensing – traditional and open source

• Module 4: Public policy options to support wider access to software

• Final exam

This is a tutor facilitated course. Academic support is provided by experienced tutors who are expert practitioners in the field of software licensing.

This course is offered free of charge.

Target Audience

This course is open to legal practitioners, procurement officers, information technology practitioners, project managers, application developers, policy makers with a prior knowledge of intellectual property.
