Unlocking private investment for Kenya’s water sector

Traditionally, banks have not seen the water sector as financially viable, while water utilities are unfamiliar with lending practices of commercial banks. The Kenya Microfinance for Community Water Projects – an output-based aid (OBA) project – made loans affordable to low-income communities while reducing the risk to the lender. This video explains how the project leveraged domestic market finance, enabling 35 community water projects to access $35 million in loan finance and more than 200,000 people to access to clean water.
