Experts directly involved in the implementation of Performance Based Financing across Africa share their perspectives and experiences and critically review the various contributions of Performance Based Financing even as they respond to many of the claims made by Paul et al (BMJ-GH 2018). They seek to

(i) reflect on how the Performance Based Financing approach developed in Africa;

(ii) highlight how the Performance Based Financing approach benefited health systems and informed transformations in the health sector; and

(iii) consider challenges and propose guidance for reforming Performance Based Financing implementation.
