Experience a virtual site visit to the SUDOKWON landfill - a state-of-the-art regional landfill that brings the concept of resource circulation to life. The Korean government developed the landfill to meet the increasing energy demands in the country and lower the use of fossil fuels by creating energy from waste. The operation and management of the landfill are described in this module and will give learners an overview of the daily operations of the landfill. The process for managing incoming waste is described, highlighting the use of radio frequency identification (RFID), closed-circuit television (CCTV), and internet of things (IoT) in the management of incoming wastes, and traffic in the landfill.

An integrated waste management system which comprises an information system, an operating system, and a control system has been developed for the SUDUKWON landfill management and this module describes how this system works. Other aspects of managing the landfill like covering and deodorizing wastes, dealing with leachate, landfill monitoring, and determining tipping fees using the integrated waste management system are covered in the module. 

Citizen engagement has always been a hallmark of the SUDOKWON landfill corporation (SLC’s) operations as landfills are usually a serious concern for the public, especially for those who live near the landfill. In this module, the various measures used for citizen engagement in the SUDOWKON landfill are described, including the involvement of citizens in the management of the landfill, financial resources from the revenues of the landfill flowing back into the community, and various recreational facilities like a golf course and Olympic-sized swimming pool that has been developed on the landfill.
