Knowledge Note

Senegal’s real GDP grew by 5 percent annually on average from the mid-90s until 2005, and the proportion of the population below the national poverty line declined to 51 percent in 2005/6 from 68 percent in 1994/5.1 Due to a series of successive shocks, both external and external, economic growth has slowed since 2006 resulting in an estimated real GDP growth of only 1.25 percent for 20091 and clawing back some of the gains in poverty reduction of the early decade.1 A third of the population still subsists on less than US $1.25 per day
