As urban populations mushroom, municipal solid waste is increasing at alarming rates. Low-cost interventions that utilize existing technical and human resources, combined with support for crucial behavior change at individual and municipal level, can significantly improve solid waste management. This note explores the use of output-based aid (OBA) – a form of results-based financing – in solid waste management. It presents two innovative projects being implemented in the complex environments of Nepal and the West Bank, and offering lessons learned.
