The Government of Uganda recently decentralized rural water supplies, awarding contracts to private operators. But a critical lack of local finance existed, and local operators needed capacity-building. The Global Partnership on Output-based Aid (GPOBA), IFC, and DevCo partnered with the private sector to help find local solutions to water problems in rural Uganda, bringing together local financial institutions and small-scale water providers. The project supported installation of 700 stations distributing clean piped water, serving more than 55,000 people.
