Land and Water Rights Interface – Exploring the Concept of Water Tenure

Against the backdrop of rising water demand and increasing undernourishment and food insecurity, irrigation seen as crucial to fulfilling food demand particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this webinar is: 1) to describe the concept of water tenure in the context of the semi-arid regions in sub-Saharan Africa; 2) to present an overview of institutional arrangements for water resources governance and management; 3) to examine the relationship between land tenure and water tenure in particular contexts; and 4) to examine the implications of water tenure and water resources management for smallholder irrigated agriculture.

About the Presenters

Stephen Hodgson

Stephen Hodgson is an international environmental lawyer with experience of advising governments, international organizations and NGOs in more than 50 countries around the world. He has particular experience in all aspects of water law and institutions including: (a) international water law; (b) framework water resources legislation; (c) irrigation & drainage law including water user organisation (WUO) legislation; (d) water supply & sanitation law; and (e) legislation on dam safety and hydropower development.
