Intercultural Week

Celebrating World Day (May 21) for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

HRDLS Intercultural Program

Intercultural Effectiveness is the key to enhancing client engagement of different national/cultural background and maximizing effectiveness in our global cause of dialogue and development. This is even more critical in a COVID environment where we rely mainly on remote communications or limited face-to-face interactions. To this end, the Intercultural Program is launching an Intercultural Week and host a series of webinars starting from May 17th, to celebrate May 21, the World Day for the Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, and to help enhance intercultural effectiveness, virtual collaboration and business results.

The key objectives are to:

  • celebrate cultural diversity and inclusion as part of the WBG tradition and help transform how we work, communicate and lead, to maximize that value of cultural diversity and our business impact for dialogue and development
  • strengthen awareness of how cultural implicit biases and behavioral differences can cloud our best judgement in decision-making and engaging our clients, disrupt our relationship, trust, and effectiveness in delivering our development agenda
  • explore tools and potential practices to help better emphasize with colleagues, clients and stakeholders, and enhance our conversations of end-racism, inclusion, engagement, respect and virtual collaboration in the pandemic-hit context across national borders, cultures, races, and different socio-economic groups

International Survey in Identifying Diverse Faculty and Executive Developing Institutes: Most of the developing institutes can get soft loans from various International Development Agencies like African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, DANIDA, GIZ, UNDP, UNESCO, USAID, and World Bank. For the implementation of faculty development programs, planning country-specific vocational educational programs, industrial training units, instructional material development centers, administrators training, leadership development, etc. They have to collect in-depth information on the availability of competent faculty members, resources, and experiences in planning needed development programs. Next, they have to send letters of invitation to the identified institutes. Based on the response, they have to evaluate the technical and financial proposals and choose the best consultant institute. The key areas of evaluating are: Quality of the trainers, Resouces, draft training programs submitted, and accommodation of diverse global participants. Considering the diversity, we investigated many specialist institutions in and around the city, state, region, and the whole nation. We prepared draft training programs based on the career needs of the trainees and discussed with the specialist training institutes and updated the training programs which were welcomed by the project authorities. The success of the project is due to getting the cooperation of the diverse training institutes, qualified faculty members, and their leadership. Any human resource development institute should develop skills in planning diverse projects. The faculty should have open mind, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and collative mindset. We planned to develop the faculty members through various specialist institutions.

Global Citizens: Many global universities are focusing on admitting the best diverse participants from various backgrounds. The advantage is finding the best solutions by thinking out of the box. The diverse culture gives various angles of analyzing the same problem. Also, the best MNCs/ transnational companies are establishing their product development centers in many countries in Asia, Europe, and America. Engaging multinational candidates give many sets of a large variety of solutions.

In times like this when the world is in crisis on climate change, we need to boost our cross culture communication in order to adopt sustainable practices and dialogues within the team and with clients with flexibility to incorporate resilience measures into project design.

There are many challenges. The faculty need to learn more from Strategic Human Resource Development, training the executives of transnational companies/ multinational companies. When problems are posed, we can see the method of solving by various participants with different cultures.

An intercultural week should be celebrated in the factories, schools, public offices, towns, and other places. Many workers don't tolerate other communities in the workplace. The management should educate the workers.
