736 million people still live in extreme poverty – which means living on less than $1.90 a day. But 25 percent of the population lives on less than $3.20-a-day, which is the poverty limit, or index, in many countries. And almost half of the world lives on less than $5.50 a day.
Concerns over livable incomes and solid jobs are what we face every day at the World Bank Group, especially in today’s era of technological change. How are we likewise going to provide more opportunities for the poorest and most vulnerable? And what is the role of technology in helping make that happen? While technology can help tackle the most pressing global challenges of our time, it also poses new risks – from cybersecurity to data privacy- that must be addressed.
