Cities and Climate 101: Master Class on Low-Carbon City Development

"Foundational knowledge and skills to help operational teams and their client cities to both better understand the impacts of climate change and transition to low-carbon development pathways."

Cities are integral to tackling the global climate crisis. The master class aims to build the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to help operational teams and their client cities to both better understand the impacts of climate change and transition to low-carbon development pathways. At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of cities in addressing climate change and the challenges cities face in scaling up climate action
  • Learn about the key concepts of GHG emissions and approaches for climate mitigation in cities
  • Explore the challenges, opportunities, and solutions towards deeper decarbonization in key urban development sectors – including urban form and land use, transportation, buildings, and waste and wastewater management based on global case studies
  • Identify the country- and city-specific enabling conditions within planning and finance systems to support climate-smart infrastructure development.

The master class is a collaboration between the Bank’s Sustainable City Infrastructure and Services Global Solutions Group, Climate-Smart Cities Community of Practice, and the City Climate Finance Gap Fund.
