Benin’s per capita income of US$7501 and the country’s sustained growth rates averaging 4.7 percent annually during the last decade, resulting in modest increases in its per capita income (US$750) as well as improvements in human development.2 Nevertheless, poverty remains widespread, with 47 percent of the population still subsisting on less than US $1.25 per day,3 and the economy remains undiversified and vulnerable to external shocks.
