This webinar facilitates a discussion with central banks and regulators about how they can accelerate efforts to “green” the financial system. Our distinguished panelists will speak about: i) sustainable finance strategies of their countries, ii) the importance of developing local standards, such as climate finance taxonomies, to harmonize international approaches and iii) the relevance of creating national sustainable-finance committees or working groups, among others.

About the Presenters

Rafael del Villa

Chief Advisor to the Governor, Banco de México

Rafael del Villar is an economist from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and has a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1988). He has been a professor of economics at the Texas University A&M and at ITAM, where he was also the director of the Center for Studies in Competitiveness. Now he is an advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Mexico, where he builds awareness about the climate and environmental risks that impact the country’s financial system. He has been leading discussions on the need for tools and methodologies for climate finance. In the Network of Central Banks and Supervisors for Greening the Financial System, he leads the Market Dynamics group. He also participated in the G20’s Green Finance Study Group from 2016 to 2018.

Mariana Escobar Uribe

Sustainable Finance Group Head and Advisor to the Financial Superintendent of Colombia SFC

Mariana Escobar Uribe is an advisor to the Financial Superintendent of Colombia responsible for the SFC's Green Finance and Climate Risk strategy. Mariana joined the SFC in 2018 to support the design of the innovation strategy of the SFC. She also worked at Citi Colombia as Sustainability Manager and representative of Citi Foundation in Colombia. Mariana has a Masters Degree in International Relations from Bentley University and a Master in International Affairs and Development from Columbia University.

Jose Manuel Marques

Head of the Financial Innovation Division en Banco de España

José Manuel Marqués is the head of the Financial Innovation Division at Bank of Spain (Banco de España). In this position, he focuses on studying the main trends that transform the financial system and define the main implications for the central bank. Prior to this position he was head of the International Financial Markets Division and held a number of different jobs within the bank since joining in 1996. Marqués has studies in Economics and Business from the University of Zaragoza, and an MSc from University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona.
